Jane Johnson, a 40-year-old from Birmingham, Ala., went viral in October 2025 after sharing that someone at a hair salon asked if she was 50
Nearly a year after the TikTok video that garnered over 1 million views, she tells PEOPLE which skincare treatments and lifestyle changes were behind her dramatic transformation
Johnson also shares why her journey is about more than looking younger and how she learned to separate her appearance from her self-worth
When Jane Johnson turned 40 in October 2025, she had no idea a casual question about her age at the hair salon would spark a viral conversation about aging.
At the time, someone sitting nearby had asked if she was 50, and while Johnson initially brushed it off, she became curious enough to ask TikTok users how old they thought she really looked. The responses, however, were far more intense than she expected, with some commenters saying they thought she looked even older than 50.
Now nearly a year later, Johnson’s dramatically younger-looking appearance in a July 2026 update left viewers stunned, with some claiming she looks “20 years younger.” Through it all, Johnson tells PEOPLE exclusively that the experience ultimately taught her something bigger than skincare.
“One thing I learned last year is that it’s true we get one shot at this life,” she says. “I’m not going to spend it being upset about some rude comments. Most things just aren’t that serious.”
Johnson’s viral moment began with a conversation at the salon about having shingles earlier that year. When the woman asked whether she was 50, Johnson didn’t take it as an intentional insult. Instead, the question lingered enough to make her wonder how other people perceived her, so she decided to ask TikTok what they thought, without anticipating the avalanche that followed.
As comments poured in, Johnson says a “TON of people” thought she “looked way older than 50,” despite the fact that she was freshly 40.
The attention also came during an especially difficult period in her life, following a year marked by personal stress and grief over losing her father. Johnson tells PEOPLE the experience took a toll on her both physically and emotionally, prompting her to focus on recovering rather than dwelling on strangers’ opinions.

That mindset remained important as she began changing her approach to skincare.
Johnson became consistent with both morning and evening routines, started wearing sunscreen every day regardless of the season or weather, increased her water intake, mostly cut out alcohol and began taking fish oil and super green supplements. She also added a hydrating microdermabrasion facial each month when she wasn’t getting another treatment.

Her treatment plan became more involved, too. Over the following months, Johnson underwent three rounds of Clear + Brilliant, a gentle laser skin-resurfacing treatment, and microneedling, a procedure that uses tiny needles to help stimulate collagen and improve skin texture.
Johnson also received Dysport, a quick injectable that softens wrinkles, one round of filler to address areas that she felt looked hollow and a small V Beam laser treatment, a light laser used to reduce redness and small skin issues.
She estimated she spent about $250 a month on skincare treatments on average, with dermatologist membership discounts, specials and treatment points helping to lower the costs.
“That said, I won’t do all of this every year and, what I’ve spent on skin care, I’ve saved in makeup and possibly bigger procedures down the line,” Johnson says.
Among everything she tried, Johnson says she became a “big fan” of microneedling, noting that a steeper price tag doesn’t necessarily mean a better product. Her favorite skincare and makeup products each cost just $6 and are often from affordable brands like Elf and Eucerin.
The changes, however, weren’t limited to her skin. Johnson says she learned to simplify her makeup routine, eventually cutting her makeup bag down significantly after figuring out which products worked best for her. At 40, she found that a lighter approach complemented the changes she had made to her skin.
By July 2026, Johnson’s video showed the results of that yearlong effort, and viewers were stunned by the difference in her smoother skin and reduced appearance of wrinkles.
But for Johnson, the transformation was never simply about looking younger. She had been clear from the beginning that what she really was wanted to look her age — and she didn’t want appearance to determine her sense of worth either.
For anyone considering making major changes because they feel insecure, Johnson tells PEOPLE that her advice is to start somewhere deeper than the mirror: “Don’t change anything drastically unless and until you’ve done the internal work to 1. Understand your inherent worth and 2. Understand that your worth has nothing to do with appearance. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true.”
