A pickup truck plowed through a crowd in Chihuahua City celebrating Mexico's World Cup win over South Korea prompting increased security at future fan gatherings, officials said.
"We are looking to prevent lamentable acts such as occurred in the last game when a person was run over during these festivities," Chihuahua State Public Safety Secretary Gilberto Loya said at his weekly news conference on Monday, June 22.
The driver of the pickup faces at least six criminal complaints for causing injuries and damages after Mexico defeated South Korea 1-0 on the night of June 18 at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, setting off celebrations across Mexico and Mexican American communities.

The driver was released from jail on bond Saturday night, June 20, as the case awaits trial. The bond was set at 50,000 pesos (more than $2,800 in U.S. dollars), El Heraldo de Chihuahua reported.
The driver's last name was not disclosed by authorities in keeping with rules in Mexico regarding the naming of crime suspects.
As a preventive measure, there will be an increased police presence at public World Cup watch parties and gathering in the state of Chihuahua, Loya said, who asked that fans celebrate responsibly.
"There is a moment of euphoria on the part of citizens, of Mexicans, who we get very happy that our (national soccer team) selection won," Loya said, while also urging fans to exercise common sense and safety.
