“Star Wars: Starfighter” first look reveals Ryan Gosling’s sector of the galaxy far, far away

The Star Wars: Starfighter first look arrived at Disney’s D23 Expo.

Ryan Gosling leads the film with the young Flynn Gray for his future Ghost Rider director, Shawn Levy.

The film opens in theaters next summer.

Hot off another off-world epic, Project Hail Mary, and news of his induction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Barbie alum Ryan Gosling takes on the Star Wars franchise in a first look at Star Wars: Starfighter, shown on Friday night at Disney’s D23 Expo fan convention.

In the footage that has not yet been released to the public, Gosling’s Kade Auberon confronts a young boy (played by Flynn Gray) about touching his decommissioned Starfighter, which he hails as the “fastest ever built.”

“Never heard of it,” the kid says, to which Kade replies, “There’s a reason for that.”

The aforementioned Starfighter is then put to the test all over the galaxy.

The film, helmed by director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine), is pegged as an entirely original story set in a period never before explored in Star Wars. To Levy, it’s neither a prequel nor a sequel, though the story is set five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Gosling and Gray are joined in the cast by House of the Dragon star Matt Smith, Frankenstein’s Mia Goth, Lanterns lead Aaron Pierre, English comic Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Hedda and Good Grief’s Jamael Westman, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms standout Daniel Ings, and six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams.

Last November, Levy spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the influence that Star Wars had on his work and the surreality of now making one of these movies himself.

“It is surreal and awesome every day walking onto this set, to have made up a new and original Star Wars story that is neither a sequel nor a prequel to anything,” he said at the time. “I have deep respect and love for this historic legacy, but a chance to do something fresh and original and to do it with Jonathan Tropper, the writer of The Adam Project, and with Gosling. Every day it’s hard as hell, but it’s dream-come-true territory every day.”

Star Wars: Starfighter is on the calendar to release in theaters on May 28, 2027.

Levy and Gosling must’ve got along famously making this movie because, as announced at San Diego Comic-Con this past July, the two are teaming up again for a Ghost Rider movie for Disney’s Marvel Studios. Gosling will finally star as the comic book character he’s been campaigning for in the press and behind the scenes, with Levy returning to the Hollywood superhero giant after Deadpool & Wolverine.

“As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time,” the actor said on stage. “If we’re really going to do this, there’s only one director who can do it.”

“We spent a lot of time last year making Starfighter,” Levy added, “and Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, and the opportunity, and what this movie could be, and finally I was like, ‘Bro, let’s ride!’”
