The Brink of War brings a pivotal moment in Cold War history to the big screen.
The historical drama, which premiered in theaters on Aug. 14,follows President Ronald Reagan (Jeff Daniels) and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev (Jared Harris) as they meet in Iceland for the 1986 Reykjavík Summit, where tense negotiations over nuclear weapons bring the two Cold War rivals closer to a historic agreement.
The Brink of War also stars J.K. Simmons as Reagan’s Secretary of State, George Schultz. While speaking to PEOPLE in August 2026, Daniels said working with Simmons and Harris was an actor’s dream.
“To get three like-minded actors who were throwing their A games at each other, that’s fun,” he said. “That’s where the fun is.”
While most of the film’s characters are based on real-life figures, Aya Cash and Guy Burnet were cast as fictional journalists who offer an outside perspective on the summit and the Reagans and Gorbachevs.

Daniels brought Reagan to life in The Brink of War, but the actor admits the role came with its challenges.
“He is visually so well-known,” Daniels told PEOPLE, explaining that his approach was to “suggest” Reagan rather than rely on “some impression with prosthetics.”
“You do enough with the voice and the mannerisms, and suddenly [the audience is] seeing what he’s thinking and what he’s feeling, which is where the story is,” he continued. “I felt like I became him more often than not. And so that’s all you can hope for as an actor.”

Harris stars opposite Daniels as Gorbachev.
Each day on set, Harris spent three and a half hours in hair and makeup transforming into the former Soviet leader, who was recognizable for the “unique port-wine stain on his forehead,” as the actor described it on the Today show in August 2026.

Beyond his physical transformation, Harris studied Gorbachev and leaned on the script to inform his performance.
“I wanted to challenge [Jeff] in the way Gorbachev would have challenged Reagan,” he said. “The most important thing is that you try and understand what the stakes for the character were so that you can live it and experience it.”

J.K. Simmons as George Schultz

Simmons plays another critical figure — Reagan’s Secretary of State, Shultz. Like Daniels and Harris, Simmons relied on research to inform his performance.
“I watched and listened to as much George Shultz as I could,” he said during an appearance on Fox and Friends in August 2026 before explaining how he viewed Shultz’s role in the Reagan administration.
“He feels like the first mate to me, or the defensive coordinator for the head football coach,” Simmons said. “It is his job to serve at the president’s pleasure, but also to diplomatically advise him.”

Hope Davis as Nancy Reagan

Hope Davis plays Nancy Reagan, who, beyond her duties as first lady, was one of her husband’s closest confidantes and wielded considerable influence behind the scenes during his presidency.
Daniels campaigned for Davis to play his on-screen wife, calling her “a pro” during an interview with Angel Studios. The pair formerly worked together on Broadway and other projects.

Branka Katić as Raisa Gorbachev

Branka Katić portrays Raisa Gorbachev in The Brink of War. Similar to the Reagan’s, Raisa and Mikhail shared an exceptionally close relationship.
She frequently traveled alongside her husband, including to Iceland for the 1986 Reykjavík Summit, and the couple regularly discussed politics and policy, according to AP and the Los Angeles Times.
