A previous piece on overplayed songs brought in a wave of readers with their own nominations, and one name came up again and again: Stairway to Heaven. Fair point. Leaving Led Zeppelin’s signature epic off a list like this was always going to draw mail.
Round two. Five songs this time, straight from what readers kept bringing up.

One critic called it flatlythe most overplayed rock song in the entire history of classic rock. Eight and a half minutes, a slow build into that guitar solo, and decades of radio stations reaching for it instead of digging into the rest of Led Zeppelin’s actual catalog. Whole Lotta Love exists. Kashmir exists. Somehow it’s always Stairway.

“Play Freebird!” became its own meme for a reason. The song’s eight-minute guitar outro turned intothe definitive DJ bathroom break, long enough for a full commercial cycle and then some. Southern rock fans genuinely love it. Classic rock radio just never learned when to stop.

Ranked repeatedly among the most overplayed songs on classic rock forums, right alongside Stairway. One1980s AnandTech thread poll nominated it specifically for the same reason: an outro so long it gave the DJ time to take a coffee break, then came right back for another spin an hour later.

That opening riff, instantly recognizable, has been used as shorthand for the entire hair metal era for so long that even people who’ve never heard the full song could hum the intro. Music writers have grouped it directly withWonderwall and Back in Black as radio’s go-to trio whenever a station needs to fill a slot without thinking.

There’s something inexplicable about this song’s staying power. During the 2026 World Cup, England players and traveling fans turned “Wonderwall” into an actual post-match ritual, singing it together in the stadium after every win, starting with the opening victory over Croatia and continuing through the quarterfinals. Even Noel Gallagher weighed in, calling the whole thing “magical” andinsisting the song belongs to the people rather than the band. Music critics list it separately among thehandful of alternative rock tracks that are treated the exact same way Stairway to Heaven is on classic rock radio, hammered into the ground until the melody stops registering as music and starts registering as noise. And yet a stadium full of grown men will still belt out every word on command. What makes a song stick like that is anyone’s guess.

None of these are bad songs. That’s genuinely the whole problem. Radio took five genuinely great tracks and played them so relentlessly that entire generations grew tired of music they never actually disliked in the first place.
