Brooke George, a U.K. influencer, could face the death penalty after she was charged with the murder of her boyfriend, a human rights group has said.

George, 23, was arrested on June 22 and charged with the murder of her boyfriend in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to Detained in Dubai. She is being held at Bur Dubai Police Station, the human rights group said, and if convicted, she could face the firing squad.

According to Detained in Dubai, George told the group that she met a 26-year-old man on Facebook and traveled to Dubai from Kent to visit him. On a second visit, the internet personality continued, he allegedly became controlling and abusive, and when she learned that he had only booked her a one-way ticket, she wanted to return home.

George claims that her boyfriend assaulted her multiple times — including by punching her in the face — and during one altercation, she reached for a kitchen knife and stabbed him in self-defense.

Neither Dubai Police nor George returned PEOPLE's request for comment.

On TikTok, George maintains a following of nearly 100,000, where she is known for sharing lifestyle content. She seemingly last her account on Nov. 9, posting a video partying with friends.

In a statement to Detained in Dubai, George's mother recalled that she "did not seem like herself" the day before her boyfriend's death.

"When I spoke to Brooke right after the incident, she was absolutely terrified," continued Georgie's mother. "I have never seen my daughter so frightened in my life. She was crying uncontrollably. I could see that one of her eyes was badly swollen and was beginning to close."

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, said in a statement that the case "raises serious concerns about violence against women, the right to self defence, due process and the treatment of British nationals detained overseas."

"Brooke maintains that she acted only after being subjected to a violent assault and in genuine fear for her safety," she continued. "She should be treated not merely as an accused person, but as a presumed victim of violence whose allegations and documented injuries deserve proper investigation. We will be working to ensure that her rights are protected, that she receives a fair trial, and that the circumstances leading to this tragedy are fully and impartially examined."

Stirling said Detained in Dubai is calling for Brooke to be released on bail and for Brooke's allegations against her late boyfriend to be investigated "with the same seriousness" after allegations that she murdered him.

In a statement to the BBC, the U.K.'s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said, "We are in touch with a British woman detained in the UAE, we are supporting her family, and we are in contact with the local authorities."
