Frederick Wiseman, the prolific documentary filmmaker behind the controversial 1967 film "Titicut Follies" and 2017's "Ex Libris," has died. He was 96.

The director "passed away peacefully at his home" in Cambridge, Massachusetts, early in the morning of Feb. 16, a representative for his film distribution company Zipporah Films confirmed to USA TODAY.

Described in his company's news release as a "fiercely independent artist," Wieseman built an oeuvre that was a "sweeping cinematic record of contemporary social institutions and ordinary human experience primarily in the United States and France."

Beginning with his directorial debut "Titicut Follies," the Yale Law School graduate frequently embedded himself in locations to portray people's day-to-day lives and often turned his lens toward public institutions designed to help people expose fissures in their systems.

He was well into his 30s when he started his filmmaking career, which continued into his 90s. Wiseman's most recent project was 2023's "Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros," which delved inside the French restaurant Le Bois sans feuilles, which has managed to hold on to its three Michelin stars for five decades.

Wiseman's work has earned him Emmy Awards and an honorary Oscar in 2016. He was also recognized with a MacArthur fellowship and a Peabody Award.

Robert Duvall, the Academy Award-winning actor known for his roles in Hollywood classics such as "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now," has died at 95.

Duvall died "peacefully" at home on Feb. 15 in Middleburg, Virginia, a representative for the actor confirmed. He was with his wife, Luciana Duvall.

During a seven-decade stage, TV and screen acting career, Duvall disappeared into a stunning range of strong-willed characters, leading to seven Oscar nominations and a best actor win for his role as a down-and-out country singer in 1983's "Tender Mercies."

Wiseman's wife of 65 years, Zipporah Batshaw Wiseman, died in 2021.

He is survived by two sons, David and Eric, and three grandchildren.

According to his company, a private funeral service for immediate family will take place, and a celebration of life "will be announced at a later date."

His family suggested that, "in lieu of flowers," well-wishers should "support your local PBS affiliate or independent bookstore in Frederick Wiseman’s memory."
